Why do Catholics say that Peter was the first Pope? One of our main starting points is the gospel of St. Matthew. In chapter 16 we find Jesus with his disciples in Caesarea Philippi. He asks them, “But who do you say that I am”.   Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. If you grew up going to church and you’re like me, then you may have wondered about the guy at the podium every Sunday morning. He always gave a sermon, sometimes compelling, sometimes inspiring, maybe a little bit of a snoozer every now and then, but he was up there doing his best to explain to his congregation exactly what it is we should believe. But why was he in that position? On whose authority did your pastor preach the Truth about the most important matters a human being can encounter?
